@christineburns I don't know whether you saw it, but he was on TV the other day defending the disability cuts and actually invoked his father, saying how much "dignity" he derived from his job as a toolmaker
"My father was a toolmaker" is clearly understood by people of my vintage to mean "My father was a trusted élite worker, almost a manager, unlike your fathers, who were just ordinary workers."
